  • Establishing preventive and cardiac Rehabilitation programme
  • Prevention of cardiovascular disease in Young Indian community- Familial Hypercholesterolemia diagnosis and management
  • Promotion of group practice to improve patient care & helped to develop medical sub-specialties .

Bringing global clinical trial to private sector Hospital:

Dr. Sawhney has Excellence in research. He pioneered the research in private sector. Not only in Sir Ganga Ram hospital but also he initiated the research program in other private hospitals of Delhi and around. He has conducted many National & International clinical trials of global importance (Phase – II, III & IV) as Principal investigator:

  • SGRH. Dept of Cardiology is considered to be one of the best centre for Clinical research & trial in North India.
  • Received Achievement award for Extract TIMI trial from Dr. Braunwald.
  • Member of Steering Committee for clinical trials.
  • National Coordinator for global Registry of Hypertension, Heart failure, Acute coronary syndrome, Atrial fibrillation and Lipids (EPICOR, GARFIELD,DYSIS,ASIAN-HF etc.)
  • National Coordinator for global clinical trials

Establishing preventive and cardiac Rehabilitation programme:

In March’2010, under the chairmanship of Dr. JPS Sawhney, Dharma Vira Heart Center started department of cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation which is the first cardiac rehabilitation set up in North India and second in India. This new cardiac rehabilitation facility was created after the joining of Dr.Kushal Madan. This new Department of cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation is providing in patient as well as out patient comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation to cardiac as well as cardiac surgery patients. We are successfully providing outpatient cardiac rehabilitation including exercise prescription and training, psychological counseling, diet counseling and yoga training.

Prevention of cardiovascular disease in Young Indian community-Familial Hypercholesterolemia

Most original and recognizable contribution of Dr. Sawhney towards the society is related to his pioneering research associated with prevention of heart attacks in Young Indian community.

  • Name: Prevention of cardiovascular disease in Young Indian community
  • Location: Department of Cardiology and Department of Medical Genetics, Sir Ganga Ram hospital, New Delhi, India

Key objective: To diagnose familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) in patients of young myocardial infarction by using Dutch Lipid Network clinic criteria and genetic testing.
Cascade screening of the family members to identify potential carrier of FH gene.

By identification we will be able to identify the patients who are prone for cardiovascular disease and thereby prevent heart attacks by preventive strategies.

Target set: male patients with early heart attack (age above 55 years) and female patients with early heart attack (above 65 years) with high Low Density Lipoprotein cholesterol and history of premature cardiovascular disease in the family.

Target achieved: 707 patients

Impact Made: It is an ongoing study and it has a unique potential to prevent heart attacks in young Indians. FH is a potentially lethal yet highly treatable condition which remains under diagnosed and undertreated in most parts of the world. Due to India’s remarkable population size, it is home to a significant number of FH patients. There is therefore a tremendous need for further research to be done, to determine the true prevalence of FH in India. The Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria is a simple way to diagnose FH clinically. One should suspect FH in patient of premature CAD & LDL>190mg. The cascade screening applied to nationwide programs will most certainly have an immense impact on reducing the health care burden by diagnosing and treating FH in India. To evaluate how FH contributes to the CVD epidemic in India, knowledge of FH must be disseminated to health care providers and families at all levels and in various specialties, via seminars, conferences, and journals.

“By diagnosing a case of FH, we do not identify a case but a family at risk”
